Safely Enjoying the Beaches of South Walton
Sun-soaked beaches, warm white sand, rolling dunes and crystal clear Emerald water; there's much to marvel at during your time on the beaches of 30A. However, enjoying the Gulf to the fullest extent means understanding that the water can be both incredibly beautiful and powerful. We've compiled a list of water safety guidelines, beach rules and tools to understand the flag systems to ensure you and your family stay safe during your visit to South Walton. Following the local beach rules is key Observe and obey all beach flag warnings -- the beach flag system (explained further in this article) were created to ensure that swimmers fully understand the risks of entering the water during varying conditions prior to stepping foot in the Gulf. Leave no trace -- items left behind on the beaches overnight will be discarded by county personnel as a part of Municipal Code 22-54. Leaving these items on the beach endangers local wildlife such as birds and more specifically sea turtles, as they do not have the ability to back up if they are caught in chairs or canopies. Permits are required for vehicles, dogs and bonfires on the sand. Protect our sea turtle population during Sea Turtle Season. Follow rules, ordinances and laws. To learn more, click here. No glass containers on the beach No tents larger than 10x10 feet are permitted on county-owned beaches and must be within the top 1/3 of the beach. Allow for a 15 foot setback from the dunes to allow emergency vehicles to drive safely along the beach. No charcoal grills are permitted however, a small propane grill of approximately 16x20 inches in size or less may be used. Keep off the dunes -- the sand dunes are covered in sea oats which help maintain the integrity of the dunes. Dunes are home to various wildlife and are essential in protecting our shoreline from storms. Leave it at the beach -- do not take sand, water or vegetation with you when you go. Leave only sandy footprints behind. To view the Visit South Walton official Beach Guide for information, safety, permitting and more, click here. Consult the Beach Flags before you swim The Beach Flags were created to help swimmers know when to swim and when to stay out of the water. Walton County has created a convenient text system to update you on water conditions. For Gulf conditions and flag updates, text "SAFETY" to 31279. NOTE: Entering the Gulf during double red flag conditions can result in a $500 fine and criminal charges. When the flags are double red, remember: knee deep is TOO DEEP. Rip Currents are swift and can be deadly Steering clear of a rip current can save your life, so paying close attention to the beach flag warnings and being able to identify a rip current before entering the water is a valuable tool to all beachgoers. It is important to note that if a yellow or red flag is flying, rip currents are highly likely. Signs of a Rip Current Darker surf color which indicates the water is deeper in that area Murky brown water caused by sand that is stirred up from the floor of the Gulf The presence of smaller unorganized waves appearing alongside evenly breaking waves over a sand bar Waves breaking further out on both sides of the rip current If you notice a swimmer is caught in a rip current: Notify a lifeguard if present and dial 911 immediately. Do NOT enter the water. You could be pulled into the current. Throw the distressed swimmer a flotation device if possible. Try to keep your eyes on the person caught in the current If you are caught in a rip current: Remain as calm as possible and do not fight the current. Float with the current as long as you can. Do not panic and swim against the current. This expends valuable energy needed to swim back to shore once you are out of the current. Once you are released from the current, calmly swim parallel to shore and back in. Lifeguards are available at Regional Beach Accesses March 1 - October 31 with limited roving coverage year-round. Lifeguards are provided by South Walton Fire District and funded as a part of the Visit South Walton Beach Safety Program. Regional Beach Accesses include Miramar Beach, Dune Allen, Fort Panic, Ed Walline, Gulfview Heights, Blue Mountain, Van Ness Butler Jr., Santa Clara and Inlet Beach.
